With my own daughter in school, I can't tell you how much I enjoy photographing school sports, event and portraits. As I think you can see I approach these events in a totally different way.
A simple example of this is the school portrait. It can be photographed like a passport photograph, as most school portraits are, or made into something very special.
With these portraits I strive to stay clear of the staid 'cheese' smile and work to bring out the individuality of the child.
I have a wind machine and music playing to help me achieve this, as well as being just silly, as is my nature! Having worked for one of the top beauty photographs of this century, Albert Watson, in my youth I know how to light.
Once the portrait is taken I then spend a lot of time retouching any temporary spots or blemishes and dodging and burning to electively emphasize or de-emphasize parts of an photograph and bring out the child's features.
As I have mentioned on the about me page, I strongly believe in a fair and inclusive price structure, which means that for a school of approximately one hundred children the cost to the parents is generally around £35 and includes a beautiful 12"x8" card framed print and the full resolution jpg file uploaded to a secure website, which they can use to make further prints, cards, etc at their own printers at no additional cost.
I usually have two further options, 1) a beautiful white or black wood framed option for £65 and 2) a massif poster size 30"x20" option which is mounted on MDF and matt laminated for £95, which looks ultra modern and saves on framing costs. Both of these additional options of coarse include the 12"x8" card framed print and jpg file.
The above session was for a birthday and school events calender with over one hundred and thirty children sorted into birthday months and took just over an hour to photograph the twelve photographs needed and made a fun gift for the parents.
Sports and school events are great chances for parents to see how much their children are enjoying the school.
My professional event photographs adds 'added value' for their parents for both private and public school alike.
And can be used by the school in brochures and the school website at no extra cost after the event fee.
A variation of this photograph was used in a magazine spread.
With swimming lessons, galas or sponsored swims I even have underwater cameras that can be used or setup remotely.
From ballet lessons;
To school trips;
Sponsored bike rides;
To teachers performing a musical for the pupils!
From the yearly school musical;
Or the school disco;
To the prize giving ceremony;
To Thanksgiving and Santa's arrival...
Fees: For sports matches, dance classes and other small events I usually charge £150 if local, South West London, £175, if not. For the bigger events like school plays and sports day, I charge £250, as ever this includes my usual post production, colour matching and retouching and a presentation DVD full of highest resolution masters and uploaded to a secure web site for download, for the school to use as they see fit without incurring any further costs. If you wish to update your schools image and website, I can also offer a one/two day's of photography special, as directed, with all usage rights released to the school, please contact me for more details. I can also now offer to record staged event on video, using multiple 'wide screen' video cameras. This means that instead of a single shot video of the event, which most companies do, you will end up with a beautiful presentation DVD with titles and credits which will cut between a wide shot of the whole event to multiple close ups of the performers. With my film-making history, you know you will end up with a truly professional product.
