For this shoot we had an outdoor and a studio, actually kitchen, session. Again I love finding place in the shade and local parks are a great place to find them. It makes so much difference that the girls are coordinated.
Again using no artificial fill, just finding a place where the light was great.
Both shot on a long lens to knock out the background and make it abstract.
The day and light was overcast which is what I always hope for, even the direct light is soft. This one was actually taken in the parents back garden.
Our little studio was set up in ten minutes in the kitchen which has a nice clean white wall. I added to the soft daylight on the right with a one metre softbox and panelite white reflector on the left side.
The clients now have six of these photographs blown up to poster size 30" x 20" print and mounted on MDF with black sides. A great way to mount poster size photographs and a very modern, no frame, option.
Another thing about the poster print on MDF is that the photographs have a matt laminate which means they can survive any form of bun fight and greasy hands.
I really love this last photograph, it makes me smile just to see it. The whole interior/exterior session probably took about two hours including travel.
These five photographs are from one session which lasted approximately two hours as we walking around Holland Park in London.
I love the dappled light in amongst the trees...
Lots of lovely back light which blows out the hair and gives a real summer feeling.
I really hate doing the bog standard group family portrait and love trying to find ways of making the group portrait work dynamically.
Another session which took about 45 minutes for the following session. I love this one, lots of joy and happiness in the portrait. A little bit more moody but the same tree and with lovely dappled light.
Same place but closer, with the blurred out background behind. A real fairy tale location a few steps away from the above images.
Another great location, underneath the trees with the background totally out of focus.
Sometimes the best place is a quiet wall where the children know and love.
This teenager lived on a farm land and the photo shows the environment where they live and enjoy.
This portrait a few minutes later in shade by a tree.
This is a good example, a small doorway under shade with no fill light at all. I also love the warmth of the light.
This portrait was taken in their lounge, the girl was leaning on the back of a sofa and the light is an onboard flash bounced off the wall and ceiling.

Another interesting background, which typifies the farm location and again in shade.
The next four photographs were taken in an hour session. I love the Black & White version, I also love the colours in the version below but its a completely different feel.
The shawl is so rich in colour. Again it was very sunny outside and this location was completely covered by a leaf covered trellis, which is why the light is so shadowless. I literally have about two minutes to get this portrait before the subject lost interest.
Same location but again a completely different look and a change of clothes. Probably my most favourite photo this year, I call it the pixie look!
I really loved the colour of the wall, in fact I really like taking colour portraits instead of always turning the photograph into Black & White. As long as you get all the colours right it works really well.
A massive print of this photograph now takes pride of place at the clients home. I had about half an hour of dusk light to make these portraits work. Again, it makes so much difference that the cloths are coordinated. Notice the lack of the chain in this family portrait, I took it out in post because it was drawing the attention away from the subjects.
The box was the clients idea and a great one at that. Where they stay during the Summer this session really means a lot to them in the Winter months.
One of the boats in the background is owned by the client, so its an added bonus to show the boats in the background.
This was the first of the series I took and I love the archway made by the trees and the light at the end of the tunnel. Very lucky to have such a nice location.
Friend forever...
